Brief Description of the Princess Margaret Hospital School of Nursing - Dominica
The teaching of Nursing Education started as an apprentice type system of training at the Princess Margaret Hospital in 1959. Matron Francisca Dorival gave practical lectures on the ward and Ms Dorothy Harrison delivered classroom type lectures.
In 1962, the Government of Dominica requested the services of Mrs Gertrude Swaby, a Jamaican nurse, to assess the performance of the nurses in Dominica. Based on her report the government decided in the same year (1962) to establish the School of Nursing at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The School was headed by a religious Sister called Sister Marie Rudolph a Belgian, trained in England.
The Mission
The mission of the Princess Margaret Hospital School of Nursing is to facilitate the preparation of efficient graduate nurses to provide preventative, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative care to individuals and families in a variety of health care settings. The programme is available to both males and females and non-nationals between the ages of 18 and 35.
