History of Belize Technical College

Belize Technical College began as a Technical High School on the 7th January 1952 when it opened its doors to 20 boys and 21 girls. It was built to fulfill the need for young people in the community with technical and vocational skills. An attempt was made by the school’s administration to include in the syllabus enough literacy subjects to give students as liberal an education as conditions demanded while emphasizing the technical and vocational subjects.

By 1958 the idea of technical education had sufficiently caught on in Belize for the school to take a step forward along the road to development. Technical and vocational offerings were expanded and classes in Mathematics and Sciences were held.

In 1972 full conversion into a Technical College took place. The College ceased to admit students directly from Primary Schools. Graduates from Junior Secondary Schools, applicants of similar level and graduates of other secondary schools were admitted. To make possible the expansion and development of the College, its accommodation was nearly doubled and most of its laboratories and workshops re-furbished and re-equipped.

In August/September 1990, the College converted to a full Post-Secondary Institution offering courses at two levels that is (a) Craft level and (b) Diploma/Degree. The College ceased to admit students from Junior Secondary Schools. Associate Degree Programme offerings were expanded in both 1992 and 1993.

In order to be admitted into the College, students must have completed a secondary education course and possess a high school equivalency certificate. However, mature students are considered.
