The Antigua State College was established on the Hill at Golden Grove, in 1977, by the merger of two already existing Institutions.

The first, the Leeward Islands Teachers’ Training College, continuing in the excellent traditions of its Mother College - The Spring Gardens Moravian Teachers’ Training College served students from all over the Leeward, as far south as Barbados, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The second, the Golden Grove Technical College was launched in 1972 under British sponsorship. It was made up of the Hotel and Catering Department, the Commercial Department and the Engineering and Construction Department. The Antigua State College then, had four departments.

In 1978, the Advanced Level Department was added when all Sixth Forms in the Secondary Schools were brought together at the State College. The combination of these five departments under the leadership of Dr. Alister Francis, the Principal, augured well for the future. In 1981, the Hotel and Catering Department was moved to Dutchman’s Bay to become the new Hotel Training Centre.

Since Independence, when there were one hundred and fifty six graduates, the college population has grown, under the timeless leadership of Dr. Alister Francis, to cover seven hundred students. During this period, there have been several landmarks in the life of the College, linked mainly with improved accommodations and the introduction of new programmes. These include the introduction of the First Year University Programme and the Business Studies Programme. Run in conjunction with the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, the birth of the First Year University Programme marks a significant step forward for the College.
