History of the Institute of Management Sciences (IMS)
The Institute of Management Sciences (IMS) began operations in January, 1992. The C.L.A.S.S. Foundation and Educational Network provided funding for its initial operations. C.L.A.S.S., an acronym for the Council for Literature, Arts and Science Students, itself began as a self help project in 1984 by an enterprising group of undergraduates of the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.).
IMS is a non-profit, self-supporting, higher education institution governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees advises the Executive Body which is responsible for the operations of the Institute. The expressed mission of the Institute is "to make a valid and meaningful contribution to the development of post-secondary education in Jamaica which will be achieved by offering a consistently high level of educational programs suited to both the specific and general needs of the business community".
IMS offers six one year diploma programs in Management Studies, Computer Studies and Management, Accounting and Financial Management, Hotel Management and Hospitality, and Marketing and Sales Management; also a two year Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. All programmes are offered in the Kingston centre with selected courses being offered at regional centres in Mandeville, Ocho Rios, May Pen and Montego-Bay. A distinguished team of lecturers, which consists of persons with several years of teaching, research and business experience conducts these programmes.
IMS has also established alliances with the University of New Orleans and the London College of Management. The UNFO Executive MBA programme is facilitated by the Institute and a L.C.M. diploma course and examination is conducted by IMS adjunct faculty. The American Council on Education also has recommended that IMS programmes be accepted for transfer credits to 1,100 universities in the United States.
IMS received recognition through registration by the University Council of Jamaica in 1997. It is the youngest tertiary institution to receive this recognition. IMS has membership in several local and overseas professional organization such as the American Council on Education (ACE), the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, the Professional Societies Association of Jamaica, the Jamaica Association for Training and Development and the Jamaica Computer Society.
The executive director of IMS is Mr Winston Adams who has held this position since the founding of the institution.
