History of Barbados Community College (BCC)

The Community College was established in 1968 by an Act of Parliament - the Barbados Community College Act, 1968-23.

The Act made provision for the institution to offer education and training in the following fields:

and in "such other fields of Education as the Minister of Education may determine from time to time".

Three hundred and twenty-five students were advanced to the College in January 1969 in three Divisions - Commerce, Liberal Arts and Science. Since that time, the College has expanded in response to the development needs of the country. The Divisions of Technology, Fine Arts and Health Sciences were established between 1973 and 1975, and two other Divisions, Hospitality Studies and the Barbados Language Centre, were established between 1980 and 1982. The Divisions of General and Continuing Education and Computer Studies were established in 1988 and 1993 respectively. The Division of Hospitality Studies was replaced by the Hospitality Institute in 1995.

In addition to its ten operating Divisions, the College has three Departments responsible for Physical Education, Counselling and Library Services. The College has a well established Summer School Programme.

The Barbados Community College provides education and training for Barbadians who, on graduation, are able to make contributions to the economic and social development of their country. The College also provides opportunities for nationals of other countries, especially those in the Caribbean, to receive similar education and training.

There are three College campuses, the main one situated at the Eyrie, Howell’s Cross Road, St. Michael, where the central administration and eight Divisions are located. There are two subsidiary campuses one at Jemmott’s Lane in St. Michael and the other at Marine Gardens in Christ Church. These accommodate the Department of Nursing and the Hospitality Institute respectively.
