IMPACT Justice Legal Profession Legislation Committee Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago

For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, March 21, 2016

The Legal Profession Legislation Committee of the Canadian Government-funded project Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) is meeting to discuss a Model Legal Profession Bill which will be drafted by IMPACT Justice in response to requests by several CARICOM governments. IMPACT Justice, which is a regional justice sector reform project, is being implemented from within the Caribbean Law Institute Centre, UWI Cave Hill Campus.

Although this is the first Legal Profession Legislation Committee meeting, IMPACT Justice has held several stakeholder meetings with representatives from governments and regional bar associations to recommend and discuss proposals for provisions of a model bill.

The meeting, which will take place on March 22nd and 23rd at the Hilton Hotel, Port of Spain, will result in the preparation of instructions for the drafting of the bill. The Committee comprises a representative of the CARICOM Secretariat, a former Attorney General, a Chief Parliamentary Counsel and representatives of regional bar associations and the Hugh Wooding Law School.
