International Women’s Day Public Lecture

For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, March 2, 2015

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit (IGDS:NBU) joins the International Community in celebrating International Women’s Day under the theme “Make it Happen”.

International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements in the early 1900s and has been celebrated on March 8 since 1975 as a way to honour women’s achievements without regard to national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political divisions.

The IGDS:NBU will host a public lecture to commemorate this significant day. Dr. Wafaa Hasan will deliver the lecture entitled “Feminist Dialogue “Boycotts and the Politics of Transnational Feminist Solidarity in Israel and Palestine.”

Dr. Hasan obtained her Ph.D. in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, Canada in 2012. Upon defending her dissertation, “Orientalist Feminism: The Politics of Feminist Dialogue in Israel and Palestine,” it was nominated for the Governor General’s Academic Medal and CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award. Hasan’s main passion began and continues to reside in activist work serving as Equity Officer in unit 3906 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) for a number of years, a time during which, she spearheaded a movement to open a Women’s Center on the McMaster University campus, amongst many other initiatives around Islamophobia and LGBTQ awareness. Her travels and activism in Jerusalem and the West Bank deeply inform the work she has come to present in academic arenas.

The lecture is open to members of the general public and takes place on March 21 at 7:00pm in Lecture Theatre Four of the Clico Centre for Teaching Excellence at University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
