Tribute To Mr. Anthony Lewis

For Release Upon Receipt - Wednesday, April 30, 2014

It is with regret that we learned of the death of our colleague, Mr. Anthony Lewis, who passed away on Monday, April 21 following a short illness. Tony has had a long career within the Faculty of Humanities and Education (and its predecessor), having taught as Lecturer in Linguistics from 1979-95, and returning in 1999 as a part-time Lecturer in Linguistics and the Foundation Language programme.

He was appointed as Instructor in the Foundation Language Programme in 2005, where he continued until his passing. Tony also previously worked as Assistant Lecturer in Spanish, and Lecturer in Linguistics and Spanish at the Mona Campus.

Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Professor Pedro Welch has expressed the Faculty’s deepest condolences to Tony’s widow and family, and noted that he will be missed as a work colleague and friend after his many years of loyal service to the University.

The Service of Thanksgiving for Mr. Anthony Lewis takes place on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 at 10.00 a.m. at the St. James Parish Church. Tributes commence at 9:30 a.m.

Tributes To Mr. Anthony Lewis

Mr Anthony Lewis was my friend and colleague for many years beginning with our sharing the common space of the Faculty of Humanities and Education. He was loved by his students who admired the clarity of his mind, kindness of his touch, and generosity of his teaching approaches. Always humane in his social manner,  he was the consummate gentleman; the epitome of the collegial character that is generous and supportive. Tony, as we called him, was the great reminder of the enormous value of social decency within the academy. We remember him as a warm, pleasant, and civil soul that never uttered an ill word within the walls of the academy. He was a good man who gave to Cave Hill and Barbados the humanity of his spirit which we recognize and celebrate.
