Cultural Studies Graduate Symposium

For Release Upon Receipt - Friday, April 4, 2014

The Cultural Studies Programme at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus commenced in September 2004 and has emerged as a discipline that seeks to understand the complexity of culture and its political uses. The postgraduate programme promotes the discipline at the UWI as an important area of study and research and, by so doing, stimulates academic discourse and promotes understandings of Caribbean culture and identity.

With this focus in mind, and in celebration of its tenth anniversary year, an inaugural Cultural Studies Graduate Symposium, “TALKING CULTURE: CULTURAL STUDIES AT 10!” will feature the innovative and dynamic research of ten postgraduate students completing their MA, MPhil and PhD degree research.

Topics include:

Performance of masculinities

Music and Caribbean Identity

The Politics of Beauty

Built Heritage and Narratives of Belonging

Trade Policy and the Politics of Food

Visual Arts as cultural politics

The symposium will also reflect on the legacies of two stalwarts in the study of culture and Cultural Studies, the late Stuart Hall and the late Rex Nettleford.

This first Cultural Studies initiative of its kind will be thought provoking and exciting as students have been given the opportunity to engage with and explore the concept of Cultural Studies in a Caribbean context, examine the many facets of Caribbean cultural expression in an interdisciplinary context and from a variety of theoretical perspectives and most of all share their study and documentation of the historical range and diversity of Caribbean peoples and their cultures with the public.

The event will be held on Friday, April 11 2014 in the new Bruce St. John Room from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All are invited!
