Caribbean Export Supports the UWI

For Release Upon Receipt - Friday, April 4, 2014

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), the only regional trade and investment promotion agency in the African, Caribbean and Pacific group (ACP), is sponsoring the participation of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) at Going Global 2014, a higher education institutions’ (HEI) conference to be held at the Miami Beach Convention Centre, USA from April 29- May 1, 2014.

Attracting over 1000 delegates from across tertiary education sectors, Going Global is the annual flagship conference of the British Council which brings together HEI representatives from around the world to share best practices, network and strategies about the future of Higher Education.  The conference presents an ideal opportunity to showcase The UWI and the higher education system of the Caribbean to a highly relevant audience of international policymakers and HEIs, in collaboration with the British Council.  Vice-Chancellor E. Nigel Harris has been invited by the British Council to serve on two panels: Strategic Partnerships and Inclusive Internationalisation. Harris will also be one of two panellists responsible for delivering the final wrap-up for the 3-day conference for leaders on international education.  In addition The UWI will host a breakfast meeting for selected stakeholders, based on The UWI’s strategic projects as a cursor to partnership building.

Vice-Chancellor Harris notes that “UWI’s singular focus at Going Global is to position the University in the global landscape as an authority in small island state development and an ideal global partner. The UWI, as the largest university in the English-speaking Caribbean, and as one of just two regional (multi country) universities worldwide, is well placed to take advantage of regional and international partnerships to strengthen its mandate as an engine of development in teaching, research and public service”.

“The UWI has long been recognised as a Global leader in educational services and an essential driver in the changing landscape of small island development states.  The UWI’s ability to offer this unique expertise in educational services to a wider global audience is testimony to the innovative leadership and vision of the university” commented Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director at Caribbean Export.  “The role of the services trade as a major contributor to the GDP of the Caribbean is unparalleled and it is manifestly evident that the UWI participation in this global forum reflects a deep understanding of the strategic importance of this sector in the economies of the region”

Going Global 2014 takes place in Miami from April 29 to May 1, 2014.
